If you want to understand data in the real world — messy, high-stakes, time-pressured data — spend some time in a clinical laboratory.
Lab work looks orderly from the outside. Samples come in, analyzers process them, results go out. But inside that workflow is a constant negotiation with variability: instrument drift, reagent lot changes, QC failures, stat priorities bumping routine work, specimens that don’t meet acceptance criteria. Every shift is an exercise in real-time problem solving with incomplete information.
Here’s what that environment taught me about data:
1. Data quality is everything — and it’s never guaranteed.
A result is only as good as the sample it came from. Hemolysis, lipemia, clots, wrong tube type — any of these can corrupt an otherwise perfectly calibrated run. I learned early that before you trust a number, you have to trust the process that produced it. The same principle applies in analytics: garbage in, garbage out.
2. Trending matters more than single data points.
One QC failure can be a fluke. Three in a row is a pattern. We track Levey-Jennings charts, monitor Westgard rules, watch for subtle shifts before they become critical failures. I didn’t know it at the time, but this was my first introduction to statistical process control.
3. The most important questions are the ones nobody’s thought to ask yet.
I started tracking reagent consumption against test volume in Excel — not because anyone asked me to, but because I kept running into shortages that felt predictable in hindsight. That simple spreadsheet became a tool that helped our team order smarter and reduce waste. It wasn’t sophisticated. But it was data-driven.
The lab gave me a foundation I didn’t fully appreciate until I started studying analytics formally. Now I’m working to combine both — clinical domain knowledge and analytical tools — to ask better questions and find answers that actually matter at the bedside.
